Welcome to K2 Research in 60 minutes, where we will explore the upcoming K2 report “Exploring measures to monitor passenger-centric punctuality in public transport” by Abderrahman Ait Ali from VTI. Click here to access the draft (not for distribution).
The purpose of this seminar is to facilitate a collaborative discussion from different academic perspectives.

Public transport plays an important role in urban mobility and accessibility, with reliability, particularly punctuality, being a key determinant of passenger satisfaction and long-term ridership. Traditional metrics, such as On-Time Performance (OTP), often focus on vehicle performance and tend to overlook the passenger experience. This report explores alternative, punctuality metrics with more focus on the passenger perspective that more accurately reflect passengers’ actual travel experiences, i.e., passenger-centric punctuality metrics.
During the discussion, we will consider the following points:
- Why is it important to measure punctuality in public transport from a passenger perspective?
- What metrics can be used to measure passenger punctuality?
- What are the main challenges (and opportunities) of measuring passenger punctuality in public transport?
- What are some possible future works and applications within public transport? How can these improve passenger punctuality?
Abderrahman is keen to hear your thoughts on these topics.
Please note that K2 Research in 60 minutes offers the opportunity for more in-depth and critical discussion compared to K2 Research in 30 minutes, which features shorter presentations of recent publications. To derive maximum benefit from the 60-minute seminar, we strongly recommend reading the article in advance.
