Policy lab for public transport on-demand
There is an increased interest among actors for on-demand public transport which is available to the public and which functions as a complement to timetable-controlled transport – so-called public transport on-demand. Public transport on-demand is often seen as a more economically sustainable or accessible solution outside the city. It can also serve as a good alternative at times of the day when demand is low. Several actors have already introduced or are planning to introduce different variants of public transport on-demand, in cities as well as in rural areas. However, the challenges are many and some difficult choices and analyzes need to be made, for example regarding appropriate geographical coverage, at what times the traffic should be offered, ticket pricing, digital traveler information when re-planning a route, contractual term for procurement and societal effects in the form of changed traffic work and accessibility.
The purpose of this project is to improve the conditions for the development of new, sustainable public transport on-demand services in Sweden, by establishing a policy lab for joint knowledge exchange and learning. In this way, broader knowledge can be achieved that extends beyond individual projects and pilots.
The policy lab aims to:
- Create a meeting place for knowledge exchange and learning between industry players and researchers
- Conduct research project with aim of generating new knowledge in the field through collaborations between academics and other actors
- Study examples of key industry initiatives in the area of on-demand public transport, such as X-linjen in Säffle, Buss on demand in Ulricehamn, SkåneFlex, Mörkötrafiken in Södertälje and Paxa (Din Tur) in Sundsvall.
